The total cost of payments under the early retirement-voluntary redundancy scheme in 1987 was £4,892,016.70; 588 staff opted for early retirement-voluntary redundancy in 1987.
Financial provision is being estimated for up to 1,500 voluntary retirements in 1988, at £16,000 each, making a total of £24 million, but the final figure should be slightly shorter than this. A much clearer indication of the 1988 situation will be known in about two months time.
