asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Government estimates for the number of Irish people living in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Written Answers. - Irish People Living Abroad.
Since there is no requirement on Irish citizens to register at Irish diplomatic and consular missions abroad the Government does not have comprehensive data on the number of Irish citizens living in the countries mentioned by the Deputy. The countries concerned, however, have supplied us with estimates based on census returns and employment statistics. These indicate the number of first generation Irish living in the countries and in the case of Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia the numbers claiming Irish descent.
