Vol. 378 No. 6

Written Answers. - Conditions of Detention of Prisoner.

77.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the present position following his most recent inquiries regarding the prison conditions of Martina Shanahan arising from his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 22 of 16 February 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Embassy in London visited Ms. Shanahan on 3 February. At that meeting Ms. Shanahan indicated that there had been some improvement in her conditions of detention but that this improvement had not been maintained. Ms. Shanahan also asked at the meeting for assistance in obtaining a transfer to another remand centre. The Embassy made further representations to the British authorities on foot of this meeting. The Embassy has been assured that these matters are being followed up and the Embassy is maintaining their contact with the British authorities. Ms. Shanahan is kept fully informed of developments in the Embassy's efforts to achieve improvements in her conditions.
