Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ballina Unemployment.

28.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the measures he proposes in order to alleviate the chronic unemployment in the Ballina area of County Mayo.

The Industrial Development Authority has statutory responsibility for the implementation of national industrial development policy. The information sought by the Deputy relates to the day-to-day responsibility of the Industrial Development Authority and is not, therefore, a matter in which I have a direct function. I am, however, aware of the unemployment situation in the Ballina area, having recently met at their request a deputation from the town.

I am informed by the IDA that it regards Ballina as a priority location for industrial development in 1988. During 1987, the IDA completed negotiations with Rowear Clothing Manufacturers for a £1.3 million expansion which will lead to 104 new jobs over the next three years. In addition four small industry projects were approved which will lead to the creation of 26 additional jobs. I understand that the IDA is actively promoting for industrial purposes, two advance factories in the Ballina area of approximately 28,000 sq. ft. and 26,000 sq. ft. respectively. Moreover, the Government's decentralisation programme should result in considerable benefits for the town.
