Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Car Seat Covers Standards.

31.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he intends to introduce minimum standards of flammability for car seat covers.

I have noted the concern which has been expressed recently regarding the fire danger potential of loose car seat covers.

This matter arose previously in 1985 following a number of tragic deaths related to motor vehicle fires and was the subject of special consideration then by the IIRS. Though it was recognised that there was a need for extreme care on the part of motorists to protect themselves and their children from the dangers involved, the conclusion reached was that specific legislative action would not be justified.

Available statistics from the Department of the Environment would indicate that no deaths occurred in recent years from this cause. However, in the light of recently expressed concerns, I have now asked the National Standards Authority of Ireland to examine the question of the safety of car seat covers in detail. When I receive their findings I will take whatever measures are necessary to minimise risks in this area.
