Vol. 378 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Wexford Education Projects.

56.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give details of the amounts of money made available for various projects in County Wexford to date and any commitments given for projects in County Wexford from national lottery funds; and if she will give the location and amount for each individual case.

An allocation of £4 million from the national lottery has been recently announced in respect of the operation, by my Department, of a scheme of capital grants in support of local initiative for the provision of community recreational facilities. The question of grant allocations from this fund is currently receiving attention in my Department. A small number of grants have been provisionally allocated to date and the Department is at present considering a great number of proposals for grant assistance, including those received from County Wexford. The only project in County Wexford for which a grant has been sanctioned to date under this scheme is that of Rosslare Development Association, which has been provisionally allocated a grant of £40,000 for 1988 towards the cost of building a community centre at Rosslare. It is expected that the selection of further projects to be grant-aided will be decided in the near future.

An amount of £1.9 million for 1988 from the proceeds of the national lottery, has been allocated by the Government to my Department for the establishment of fourteen local sports centres in various locations throughout the country. Wexford town is one of these locations and my Department will be discussing the matter with the relevant local authorities at an early date.

County Wexford has also benefited from non-capital lottery funding through schemes which are administered by the Town of Wexford Vocational Education Committee and County Wexford Vocational Education Committee. Details of the 1987 funding allocations in this regard are outlined in the attached statement. It is expected that allocations for 1988 will be decided upon shortly. Additionally, County Wexford has benefited from funds allocated to sports organisations in respect of coaching, equipment, administration, international competition, etc. These funds are allocated at national level and a breakdown for each country is not accordingly possible.
