Vol. 379 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drogheda Housing and Sanitary Services.

146.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the continued delay in giving sanction for the building by Drogheda Corporation of a housing scheme at St. Laurence Park, Moneymore, Drogheda, County Louth; whether one and a half years delay is unreasonable; if sanction will be given before April 1988; the cost of the scheme; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that no houses have been built by Drogheda Corporation for the past year resulting in a substantial increase in the housing list; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been no avoidable delay in granting approval to the proposed housing scheme at St. Laurence Park, Drogheda. Revised layout and cost plans were received in my Department in March 1986 but due to the high unit cost of £38,894 — total cost £1,166,827 (excluding land and other costs) proposed for the scheme — the matter is still the subject of on-going correspondence and meetings between departmental officials and the NBA (acting on behalf of Drogheda Corporation) in an effort to achieve economies. I am not, therefore, in a position to indicate when this scheme will be allowed to proceed to tender stage.

The Deputy will be aware that approval issued to Drogheda Corporation in July 1987 for the construction of four houses at Cement Road, Drogheda, which I understand, are currently under construction.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in giving sanction for the third stage of the interceptor sewer system in Drogheda, County Louth, which is before his Department for 16 months; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the planned building of a treatment plant cannot proceed until this work is completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There has been no undue delay in dealing with the Drogheda south bank interceptor sewer (stage 3) proposal in my Department. Drogheda Corporation were asked in August 1987 to examine a number of options in relation to this scheme and a response from the corporation is awaited.
