Vol. 379 No. 1

Written Answers. - Community Health Nursing.

27.

asked the Minister for Health if he has any plans to develop the potential of community health nursing; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware it is the thrust of the Government's health policy to shift the emphasis from institutional care to health promotion and primary care. In this regard I have asked health boards to ensure that adequate resource is allocated from within their budgets to further these objectives.

I do not expect that it will be possible for health boards to allocate additional funds in the current year, which would enable the community nursing service to be expanded. However, health boards keep the service under continuous review with a view to ensuring the development of its full potential so that the best standard of care can be made available to the public.
