Vol. 379 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Rents.

70.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his approval has been sought by Dublin Corporation for the recently imposed rent increases; if he intends to exercise his power or, if necessary, take additional powers to control local authority rents especially in view of the fact that the recently announced increases in rents will leave many people on social welfare and low pay actually worse off than last year even after the recently announced social welfare increases; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The making and amending of rent schemes for their dwellings is a matter for the housing authority concerned. The current arrangements provide that the rent payable is related to income with a smaller proportion of rent required from low income households. Authorities may also accept a lower rent where payment of the normal rent would give rise to hardship.
