Vol. 379 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Meath Vocational Schools.

30.

asked the Minister for Education the implications for the vocational schools (details supplied) in County Meath if the pupil-teacher ratio is raised to 20-1 from its present level; the number of teachers who will be lost in each school; the subjects dropped as a result; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Statutory responsibility for the organisation of their educational schemes rests with the Vocational Education Committees themselves. For the purpose of servicing the approved courses conducted by the committees my Department authorise allocations of teaching posts each year. The deployment of teaching staff within these authorised allocations in accordance with the requirements of their educational schemes is a matter for the committees.

In accordance with a resolution passed by Dáil Éireann on 9 March, 1988, a meeting of the Central Review Committee under the Programme for National Recovery is to be convened in order to examine the implications of the decision to increase the pupil-teacher ratio in the vocational and community and comprehensive schools sector. The Deputy will appreciate that it would be inappropriate for me to comment further pending the completion of that examination.
