Vol. 379 No. 3

Written Answers. - Gaming Machines Proposals.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends introducing legislation to abolish all gaming and lottery machines; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Gaming and Lotteries Acts are kept under continuing review in my Department. The legal position in relation to the powers of local authorities to prohibit gaming in amusement halls in their administrative areas is at present the subject of court proceedings. The question of whether amendment of the Acts is desirable will be further considered when these proceedings are finalised.

I could not indicate, by way of reply to a Dáil Question, what specific legislative proposals I might have in a particular area. Any proposals I may have in this area will be announced in the ordinary way in due course following Government approval.
