Vol. 379 No. 4

Written Answers. - Presidency of European Commission.

25.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if Ireland, as a smaller nation, will be making a bid for the Presidency of the European Commission this year.

A new Commission will take office in January of next year. The members of the Commission and, from among its members, the President of the Commission are appointed by common accord of the Governments of the member states.

As the question of the appointment of the President of the Commission is an issue for intergovernmental consultation, I would not wish to make any announcement on the matter at present.
