asked the Minister for Education the number of students at senior cycle in second level who did not take Irish in the Leaving Certificate in the most recent five years for which figures are available.

The number of Leaving Certificate candidates who did not take Irish in the examination in the most recent five years for which figures are available is: 1978, 2,986; 1979, 3,364; 1980, 2,810; 1983, 4,179; 1984, 5,681.

asked the Minister for Education for the year in which the most recent figures are available, the percentage of all Leaving Certificate examinees, that is, not only those actually taking Irish for the examination, who gained a Grade D or higher in (i) the ordinary level and (ii) higher level in the Leaving Certificate paper in Irish.

The percentage of all Leaving Certificate examinees (school candidates) who obtained Grade D or higher in Irish in 1984 (the most recent year for which figures are available) was as follows:
