Vol. 379 No. 6

Written Answers. - Curriculum Changes.

304.

asked the Minister for Education the changes which are planned for the curriculum in Irish at (a) primary and (b) post-primary level; and when these changes will take effect in the classroom.

The Primary Curriculum Review Body which I established last October will review the curriculum in Irish at primary level. The report and recommendations of the review body will have my special attention when they are available.

The Coiste Cúrsa Gaeilge (Junior Level) have submitted their findings regarding curriculum content and assessment objectives for the three levels of Irish in the new Junior Certificate. The proposals have now been adopted by the NCCA and will be put forward for official sanction.

The new Junior Certificate examination will be held for the first time in 1992. The courses leading to this examination will be introduced in the schools in the first year of Junior Cycle in September 1989.

The Coiste Cúrsa Gaeilge (Leaving Certificate) have already had their first meeting. They will prepare proposals for the revision of syllabuses for Ordinary and Higher Level Irish to be introduced in the schools in September 1990.
