Vol. 379 No. 6

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

136.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason an old age noncontributory pension has not been awarded to a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary.

The claim of the person concerned to old age pension was investigated and was referred to a deciding officer. Before making a decision on the claim, the deciding officer sought additional information concerning a deed of transfer. The report of the local social welfare officer containing this information is now on its way back and on its receipt the case will be referred to the deciding officer for decision. It is expected that the person concerned will be notified of the outcome within the next few days.

137.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when unemployment benefit will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny.

Under the provisions of the Social Welfare Acts a person can be disqualified from receiving unemployment benefit for such period not exceeding six weeks from the date he leaves his employment, if he loses his employment through his own misconduct or has voluntarily left his employment without just cause.

The claim of the person concerned was disallowed for a period of six weeks on the grounds that he had voluntarily left his employment without just cause. He was advised of his right to appeal against this disallowance and to date no appeal has been received.

Due to an oversight at the local employment exchange he was disqualified from receiving unemployment benefit for a period of six weeks from 25 January 1988, when he made his claim to unemployment benefit rather than 31 December 1987, when he left his employment.

Arrangements have now been made to pay all arrears of unemployment benefit due less any amount of supplementary welfare allowance which was paid in respect of the period concerned. Further payments of unemployment benefit at £108.20 weekly will continue to be paid to him as they become due.
