Vol. 379 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South African Fruit and Vegetables.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total tonnage and value of South African fruit and vegetables for which import licences were issued in each month of 1987; the number of licences issued; if his attention has been drawn to reports that South African fruit and vegetables are being imported as the produce of other countries, such as Botswana; the measures, if any, which are being taken to prevent this practice; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No such licences were issued in 1987. However, the Revenue Commissioners are aware of reports alleging that South African fruit and vegetables are being imported as produce of Swaziland. These reports are being investigated.

Does this mean that the Government are not issuing any further licences for the importation of fruit and vegetables?

There are certain requirements with regard to the issuing of licences for the importation of fruit and vegetables from South Africa. At present they are not being met and consequently the licences are not being issued.
