Vol. 380 No. 1

Written Answers. - Solvent-Related Deaths.

187.

asked the Minister for Health the number of persons who have died in this country in the past year as a result of aerosol sniffing.

The incidence of solvent-related deaths is difficult to quantify. While the International Classification of Deaths, used by the Central Statistics Office, provides for the recording of deaths due to the toxic effect of solvents, a number of solvent-related deaths may be recorded under other applicable headings, e.g. heart failure or drug dependence.

I am concerned about the problem of aerosol sniffing and I will be addressing this problem in the context of the new Children Bill which I will be circulating in the near future.
