Vol. 380 No. 1

Written Answers. - Guildford Four.

35.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the action which has been taken in recent months to secure the release of the Guildford Four.

At a meeting with the British Home Secretary in October 1987, the Tánaiste discussed the Guildford Four case as well as other cases of concern. The embassy in London has maintained contact on the matter with the Home Office and with legal representatives of the four. The embassy has also visited members of the Guildford Four in prison.

The Taoiseach, during his recent visit to the United States, met with Mrs. Marion Hill, wife of Guildford Four member Paul Hill. Mrs. Elizabeth Hill, mother of Paul Hill, was received last week by the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Deputy will be aware that the Home Secretary is currently considering the report of the Somerset and Avon police on new evidence in the Guildford Four case and I would anticipate that there will be further contact with the Home Secretary on the matter before he completes his consideration of this report.
