Vol. 380 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Elections.

12.

asked the Minister for the Environment the arrangements he has made for the holding of the European elections in June 1989; if it is the Government's intention to uphold the decision of the previous Government and combine the European elections in 1989 with local government elections; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the relevant European instrument the next Assembly elections are due to be held in 1989. The fixing of the period for the holding of the elections is a matter for the Council of Ministers. I understand they have not yet made a decision on this. Until such time as this has been decided, the question of action by me does not arise.

In relation to the holding of the next local elections, under existing law, they are not due to be held until June 1990. I have no proposals to amend this aspect of the law.

The Minister will be aware that Dublin Corporation have 52 members and Dublin County Council have 70-odd members. Has he any intention of changing the boundaries of these authorities in time for the next local election?

That is a separate question.

That is the subject matter of a later question and the Deputy might pursue it at that time.
