Vol. 380 No. 2

Written Answers. - Protection of Ozone Layer.

25.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has had any discussion with the Minister for Industry and Commerce and the industry concerned in relation to the manufacture and sale of atmosphere damaging sprays and aerosols.

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone Layer, which was agreed in September, 1987, will limit the use of certain chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs) internationally by stabilizing their consumption from 1989 and reducing this by 20 per cent from 1993, and by a further 30 per cent from 1998, all relative to 1986. I intend shortly, to introduce the necessary motion in the Dáil to allow Ireland to join in this Protocol and in the parent Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer which was concluded in Vienna in 1985.
