Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Voluntary Redundancy-Early Retirement Scheme.

178.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total number of teachers within the vocational education system who have applied for early retirement-voluntary redundancy in the County Cork Vocational Educational Committee and (b) the schools likely to be affected by such redundancies-early retirement; and the plans, if any, she has to alleviate the likely difficulties arising in the event of her approving the redundancies-early retirements sought.

179.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total number of teachers within the vocational education system who have applied for early retirement-voluntary redundancies in the area of the City of Cork Vocational Educational Committee and (b) the schools likely to be affected by such redundancies-early retirement; and the plans, if any, she has to alleviate the likely difficulties arising in the event of her approving the redundancies-early retirements sought.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 178 and 179 together.

(a) The relevant numbers are 75 in respect of the County Cork vocational education scheme and eight in respect of the city of Cork scheme.

(b) Vocational teachers are appointed by each vocational education committee to their educational scheme as a whole and the assignment of teachers to individual schools is a matter for the committee themselves. The question of the replacement, in individual schools, of teachers who are offered voluntary redundancy and avail themselves of it will be a matter for the two vocational education committees concerned within the context of their approved allocation of teaching staff for the school session 1988-89.
