Vol. 380 No. 4

Written Answers. - Appointment of Consul.

54.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will appoint a consul on a permanent basis to cater for Irish business interests and tourists in the Balearic islands, the Canary Islands and the Costa del Sol.

Ireland has consular facilities, staffed by honorary consuls or honorary consuls-general, in Barcelona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands) and in Malaga. Details are contained on page 87 of the 1988 edition of the State Directory. An honorary consul has recently been appointed in the Balearic Islands and his office is expected to be operational shortly. These consular representatives report to the embassy in Madrid which has consular responsibility for all of Spain.

There are no plans to appoint career consuls in these locations.
