asked the Minister for Defence the number of patrols made by fishery protection vessels off the west coast and the areas visited for each month in 1987 and 1988 respectively; and whether any monofilament salmon nets were confiscated.

Limerick West): During 1987 and up to the end of April 1988 the Naval Service carried out 76 fishery protection patrols amounting to a total of 1,233 patrol days. Of this total, Naval Service vessels spent 251 patrol days off the west cost in which the following ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Zones were patrolled during each month of the period:— Zone V1A, V11B and Zone V11C.

No monofilament net was confiscated by any Naval Service vessel during this period.
