asked the Minister for Education the criteria used by her Department to determine eligibility for grant aid under the scheme for outstanding sportspersons; whether matters such as the winning of national championships or representing one's country at Olympic, World or European level renders one entitled to a grant; and if she will furnish details of track and field athletes who have been allocated individual sports grants by her Department between 1 June 1987 and 30 May 1988.
Written Answers. - Sports Grants.
The criteria used to determine eligibility for grant aid under the 1988 scheme of grants to outstanding sportspersons are as follows:
2. Eligibility
Sportspersons of proven ability, affiliated to a recognised National Governing Body of Sport, who, in the opinion of that Body are expected to compete with distinction at International level, are eligible to apply for assistance under the scheme.
A. Senior Sportspersons
(i) Olympic Sports — a minimum requirement for consideration will be membership of the current Olympic Panel.
(ii) Non-Olympic Sports — a minimum requirement will be selection to represent Ireland at International level.
B. Junior Sportspersons
A minimum requirement for consideration will be selection to represent Ireland at Junior level or achievement of a standard of national significance.
Applications in respect of all eligible candidates are assessed by a selection board appointed to consider applications and to make recommendations to me regarding the amount of grant aid to be allocated under this scheme. I propose to circulate in the Official Report a list of the track and field athletes who were awarded grants under the scheme between 1 June 1987 and 30 May 1988.
