Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - West Copper Alley, Dublin.

60.

asked the Minister for Finance the views of the Commissioners for Public Works and the National Monuments Advisory Council concerning the proposed development on the last remaining medieval lane dating from c. 1415 in Dublin, that is, West Copper Alley, Preston's Lane, Dublin 2, as this comes within the National Monuments Acts; and the action which will be taken to preserve the lane.

The site in question was inspected by an archaeologist from the National Monuments Service. The present surface is of concrete for the most part and even where some stone paving survives, it is not medieval. The works in progress in the former school now owned by USIT the student travel body, are mainly interior refurbishment which do not affect the alley.

I understand that an application has been made for planning permission to retain a ramp and provide a fire escape at this building and that the National Monuments Advisory Council is considering the question.
