Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - Goat Industry.

77.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the present position regarding the development of a goat industry in Ireland; the present estimated goat population; the number of annual exports of goats; the present position regarding registration and disease testing; and if he will extend headage payments to goats in the disadvantaged areas.

It is estimated that some 3,000 goats are at present being farmed commercially for the production of milk and wool. There were no exports of goats in 1987 according to the CSO.

There is no requirement for owners of goats to register their herds with my Department. It is, however, normal procedure to test goats for TB in a TB restricted herd. Such testing is done by the Department's veterinary staff. Infection of goats with TB while not unknown, is, however, rare.

The question of extending headage payments to goats in the disadvantaged areas from 1989 on is being considered at present.
