Vol. 382 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Birmingham Six.

7.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the precise nature of the representations, if any, made to the British authorities on the Birmingham Six case in the last few months.

We maintain regular contact with the British authorities on the Birmingham Six and other cases which give rise to concern. Most recently, on 13 June, the Ambassador in London met the Home Secretary, Mr. Douglas Hurd, to reiterate these concerns.

May I ask the Taoiseach if in the light of last week's Dáil debate a request has been made to the British authorities for clemency for the Birmingham Six?

The British authorities are fully aware of all that transpired here during the course of that debate.

I should like to ask the Taoiseach if there has been any response to this request for clemency.

The Deputy should be aware that these cases are the subject of more or less continuing dialogue between the two Governments. The British Government are well aware of our views on the matter and, indeed, now they are very well aware of the unanimous view of this House in regard to the matter.

May I ask the Taoiseach if he would take the opportunity to convey to the British Government, not necessarily in public, the concern that was felt in this country over the verdict and over the continuing revelations about apparent collusion between witnesses at the court case?

I will be glad to do that.

Perhaps I could broaden the question slightly and ask if the Taoiseach has had any indication from the British authorities as to when the Guildford Four and the associated case may go before the Court of Appeal and when a decision in expected?
