Vol. 382 No. 10

Written Answers. - Income Tax Allowances.

59.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason a tax-free allowance has been reduced to £20.89 per week for a person (details supplied) in County Meath; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that as the taxpayer had not completed a return of income her allowances for 1988-89 were restricted to her basic entitlement of £1,086. The position has now been amended, following receipt from the taxpayer of a return of income for 1988-89. An amended tax-free allowance certificate, incorporating an increased allowance, was issued to the taxpayer on 22 June, 1988. Any tax overdeducted from her earnings since 6 April, 1988 will be refunded to her by her employer on operation of this certificate.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange to have a proper income tax allowance issued to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny where application for additional tax relief was made some three to four weeks ago.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that an amended certificate of tax-free allowances incorporating additional allowances in respect of mortgage interest relief, and life assurance relief, will be issued to the taxpayer as soon as possible. Any tax which has been overdeducted from his earnings since 6 April, 1988, will be refunded to him by his employer when the amended certificate is put into operation.
