Vol. 383 No. 1
asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons deported from this country in each of the past ten years, broken down by (a) nationality and (b) reasons for deportation.
108.
asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons ordered to leave the country other than actual deportations by the Aliens Section of his Department in each of the past ten years, broken down by (a) nationality and (b) reason for the decision.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 108 together.
The following are the number of persons deported by ministerial order from the State in each year 1983 to date:

Prior to 1983 records were not kept in such a way as would enable me to provide figures for the number of persons deported from the State. The persons listed above were deported because I deemed it to be conducive to the public good to do so.
Records are not kept by my Department in such a way as would enable me to provide figures for persons ordered to leave the State other than by ministerial order referred to above. To do so would involve an examination of the records and the allocation of an amount of staff resources which could not be justified in present circumstances. Such persons are ordered to leave the State because of breaches of the conditions on which they have permission to be in the State or because they do not have permission to be in the State or for other breaches of the law.
