Vol. 383 No. 2

Written Answers. - Television Reception.

74.

asked the Minister for Communications if his attention has been drawn to the severe and widespread interference being caused to television reception in many areas of County Dublin and in particular those areas notified to his Department by a person (details supplied) in County Dublin; the reason for such interference; the action he proposes to take to rectify this problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department have received one complaint of interference being caused to television reception in the area referred to.

Statutory responsibility for the investigation and detection of interference to television reception rests with RTE. RTE state that their technical staff have monitored reception in the areas referred to at regular intervals over the past year but that they have found no evidence of direct interference to RTE television reception.

In the course of their investigations RTE found that the main complaint related to reception of the UK television transmissions which are of the weak fringe variety and therefore vulnerable to interference from authorised users of the frequency spectrum. RTE says that the complex aerials used in some cases in the area in question to receive both RTE and UK television signals can, under certain circumstances, result in interference being received from other sources.

RTE will investigate specific cases of reception difficulties on receipt of the names and addresses concerned.
