The ESB paid £8 million in 1986 and £40.2 million in 1987 as a contribution in lieu of rates on certain of their property. Of the latter figure, £16 million was a deferred payment in respect of 1986. These amounts were received centrally as Appropriations-in-aid of the Vote of my Department. In the absence of the basic information regarding valuations etc. the comparison requested by the Deputy is not available.
