The proposed Mullingar by-pass was included in the 1985 Road Plan among a tentative list of road projects for the period after 1987. The plan noted that these projects would be subject to cost benefit and other relevant studies to determine priorities in the light of prevailing financial circumstances and the likely level of State grants for road improvements after 1987.
The timing of the construction of the by-pass is being considered in the context of the preparation of the Blueprint for Road Development. The delay in starting this scheme is due to constraints on public expenditure.
