asked the Minister for Labour the reason the weekly salary of a single person employed on the Social Employment Scheme has been reduced from £70 to £60; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

25.
The social employment scheme weekly payment rates were revised in April 1987. The rate for a person without an adult dependant became £60 and at the same time the additional allowance payable for a person with an adult dependant was increased from £15 to £25. These combined changes in the rates enabled more persons to be accommodated within the budget allocation.
I propose having the allowances reviewed at budget time next year.
