Vol. 383 No. 6

Written Answers. - Food Advisory Committee.

187.

asked the Minister for Health the number of meetings and level of activity over the past year of the Food Advisory Committee.

Following the establishment of the new health promotion unit in my Department and the National Council for Health Promotion, a decision was taken earlier in the year to review the role and structure of the Food Advisory Committee. This review is necessary to take account not only of the need to define the functions of the Food Advisory Committee vis-àvis the new health promotion structures but also to take account of the committee structures which will be required to meet our domestic needs and or EC commitments, in relation to food law, in the context of 1992.

Proposals have been prepared in my Department and these have been circulated to all interested parties for their comments. A special meeting of the Food Advisory Committee will take place shortly to discuss these important proposals.

Because of the review and the impending replacement of the current committee with a new committee with broader functions and within revised structures, it has not been deemed appropriate to initiate any new activity in the committee this year.
