asked the Minister for Education the total authorised establishment and total actual numbers of civil servants serving in her Department in each of the general Civil Service grades from clerical assistant to secretary on 1 September for each of the years 1985 to 1988 inclusive or on the latest date for which such information is available; and the total number taking all categories together of civil servants authorised and serving in her Department on those dates.

Following is a tabular statement giving the information requested by the Deputy.

Notes:

(i) In November 1985, 58 Officers transferred into the Department of Education from the Office of Public Works in connection with the transfer to the Department of responsibility for primary school building. The general service grade posts involved were: 1 A.P.O., 2 H.E.O., 7 E.O., 4 C.A.

(ii) In May 1986, in connection with the transfer of responsibility for certain aspects of youth affairs, 8 officers from the Department of Labour tr ansferred to the Department of Education. The posts in question were: 1 P.O., 1 A.P.O., 2 H.E.O., 2 E.O., 2 C.A.

(iii) In July 1986, 56 officers transferred to the Department of the Taoiseach in connection with the transfer to that Department of responsibility for the National Library and the Genealogical Office. The general service grade posts involved were: 1 S.O., 1 C.O., 7 C.A.
