asked the Minister for Energy if he will give details of the proposed capital works for his Department for which financial allocations have been made in the 1989 Book of Estimates.

The proposed voted capital expenditure being provided for, in Votes 44 (Energy) and 45 (Forestry) in the 1989 Book of Estimates for the Public Services (abridged version), for the Department of Energy amounts to £7,231,000.

This is broken down as follows:—

(a) £4,100,000 is being allocated to Forestry for the promotion and the payment of grants for private afforestation. The grants will be paid towards the costs of planting of over 6,500 hectares and the construction of over 8,000 metres of forest roads.

(b) £2,054,000 is being allocated for the FEOGA western aid electrification scheme where it is anticipated that approximately 500 farms will be connected to electricity supply in 1989.

(c) £600,000 is being allocated for the private bog development grant scheme, under which grants are payable towards the cost of access roads, bog drainage works and the purchase, lease or hire of turf development equipment.

(d) £250,000 is being allocated for the purchase of radiation monitoring equipment associated with the radiological emergency protection plan.

(e) £200,000 is being allocated for the purchase of laboratory and other equipment by the Nuclear Energy Board.

(f) £27,000 is being allocated for windpower and geothermal energy projects.
