Vol. 383 No. 9

Written Answers. - Emigration Commission Establishment.

27.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the projected figures for emigration for the next several years, he will consider the establishment of a Commission on Emigration.

This Government has already taken a series of actions in Britain, the US and elsewhere to improve the position of our emigrants. These have been outlined to the House on several occasions.

Here at home we are taking action on the economy to ensure that no Irish person is forced to travel overseas because of lack of opportunity.

I believe that the steps we have taken at home and abroad are addressing the main causes of emigration as well as the difficulties faced by our citizens overseas.

While I appreciate the spirit behind the Deputy's question there are no plans at the present time to appoint a commission similar to that established in 1948.
