Vol. 383 No. 9

Written Answers. - Regional Development Fund.

65.

asked the Minister for Finance the allocation to each of the Border counties including County Sligo from the European Regional Development Fund for the years 1985 to 1987 and in 1988 to date; and the projects funded.

The following table details (i) the value of European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Commitments for the Border counties of Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Louth and Sligo for the years 1985 to 1987 and 1988 to date and (ii) the value of commitments under the Special Border Areas Programme (SBAP) Phases I and II for these same counties. It should be noted that in regard to the SBAP Phases I and II, the commitments for each county were determined for the overall period of the programme and accordingly are not available on an annual basis for each county.

A total of 1.25 million was made available for the promotion of tourism and small and medium sized businesses in the area under Phases I and II of the SBAP and cannot readily be broken down on a county by county basis because of the nature of the activities concerned.

A sum of £16.68 million has been provided under Phase II of SBAP for the purposes of bringing natural gas to Dundalk and other viable centres in the Border counties.

The table does not take account of the National Programme of Community Interest — Roads Development in Ireland 1986-1990, the Star and Valoren Programmes and certain telecommunication projects as they are multi-regional and cannot be broken down on a county by county basis.
