Vol. 383 No. 9

Written Answers. - Housing Grants and Loans.

108.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of families who purchased dwellings with local authority or Housing Finance Agency loans and who received the £5,000 house surrender grant who have since had their houses repossessed.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available in the Department.

109.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that families whose houses are being repossessed and who seek accommodation from Dublin Corporation, having previously received the £5,000 grant for surrendering a dwelling to the Corporation, are being asked to repay this £5,000 grant before they will be considered for accommodation; if it is in order for the repayment of this grant to be sought; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The surrender grant scheme provided that grant recipients would not thereafter be eligible for housing by local authorities. Exceptional cases however, which, in the opinion of the authority concerned, merit rehousing in accordance with their scheme of letting priorities may be considered by them. It would normally be a condition of rehousing that the repayment of the £5,000 grant should be sought.
