Vol. 384 No. 2

Written Answers. - Upgrading of Coast Road.

167.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will upgrade the coast road from Galway to Carraroe from a regional road to a national secondary road.

The present classification of roads, which was determined following a lengthy process of consultation with local authorities, is now generally regarded as established. My Department has examined the case for the upgrading of the route referred to by the Deputy and has concluded that reclassification is not warranted because it does not meet the criteria for national roads and also because the extensive ribbon development along the road would make it impracticable to upgrade the standard of the road.
