Vol. 384 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Whiskey Industry.

3.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline the Government's proposals for the future development of the Irish whiskey industry.

The future development of the Irish whiskey industry is closely linked to proposals for take-over of the Irish Distillers Group which are currently being examined by the Minister for Industry and Commerce under the Mergers, Take-overs and Monopolies (Control) Act 1978. In the circumstances, it would be premature for me to make any comment on how these proposals are likely to effect the future of the industry.

I am rather taken aback that the Minister has not a more positive reply to this question, which has been of great concern for some time. Would the Minister not agree that it is in the best interest of the Irish whiskey industry and particularly of the employees and their families that all outstanding matters affecting the future of the industry should be resolved as quickly as possible?

Without compromising anything, I would agree with that. The Deputy will appreciate that the matter is sub judice and is subject to analysis in another direction. I agree that a conclusion as soon as possible is desirable in everybody's interest.
