Vol. 384 No. 7

Written Answers. - Independent Radio Stations.

10.

asked the Minister for Communications when he will grant licences to independent radio stations; and the number and geographical location of licences to be granted.

The granting of contracts in respect of the operation of independent radio stations is the responsibility of the Independent Radio and Television Commission established under the Radio and Television Act, 1988. I have no statutory functions in this matter or in the day-to-day functioning of that body. Likewise I will have no statutory function in relation to the day-to-day operations of independent services established under that Act.

By virtue of section 5 of the Act the commission are obliged to invite expressions of interest in the provision of broadcasting services and to make a report to me of their findings with a view to determining the areas in relation to which applications for independent radio contracts are to be invited. No decision can be made in this matter until the commission's report has been received and considered.
