Vol. 384 No. 8

Written Answers. - Immigrant Services.

262.

asked the Minister for Education if an interdepartmental committee on emigration has been formed; and if so, if she considers it correct that the Minister of State at her Department should indicate, prior to the committee making recommendations, that funds would not be available from the national lottery for immigrant services in England.

263.

asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding the application for funding from the national lottery by the action group for Irish youth in London.

264.

asked the Minister for Education if she will clarify a recent statement made by the Minister of State at her Department that an inter-departmental committee on emigration has been set up which includes members of all the political parties; if she will name the members involved in this committee; and their terms of reference.

265.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement on the report (details supplied) in which the Minister of State at her Department was quoted as saying that none of the money from the national lottery will be used to aid Irish welfare organisations in Britain.

266.

asked the Minister for Education if she can account for the conflict in her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 43 of 9 November 1988 and a statement made by the Minister of State at her Department in a report (details supplied).

I propose to take Questions Nos. 262, 263, 264, 265 and 266 together.

A committee on emigration consisting of civil servants from a number of Departments has been set up by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The recommendations of the committee will be a matter in the first instance for the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The statement by the Minister of State at the Department of Education should be interpreted as relating only to the funds for Youth Affairs (£10 million) which were allocated for youth affairs from the surplus proceeds of the national lottery.
