Vol. 384 No. 9

Written Answers. - Drogheda (Louth) Housing.

23.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the continuing delay in giving sanction to the housing project at St. Laurence's Park, Drogheda, County Louth; if his attention has been drawn to the ever-increasing substantial housing list that exists at present in the borough of Drogheda; when sanction will be given; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

100.

asked the Minister for the Environment the reason for the delay in sanctioning of the St. Laurence's Park housing estate for Drogheda Corporation, County Louth; if his attention has been drawn to the increasing numbers on the housing list and the present difficulties which make it unlikely that any new house will be built during the period of the next two years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 100 together.

I would refer the Deputy to the replies to Question No. 146 of 15 March 1988 and Question No. 218 of 19 April 1988 which set out, respectively, the background to the scheme of St. Laurence's Park, Drogheda, and the number of approved applicants on local authority waiting lists for housing.

The present position in relation to the scheme at St. Laurence's Park, is that the National Building Agency, on behalf of Drogheda Corporation, have submitted a revised layout and cost plan in respect of the scheme. The documentation is currently under examination in my Department. Even if the technical aspects are found to be satisfactory, it will not be possible to issue sanction this year as it could not be funded from within the overall capital allocation for local authority housing construction in 1988. Pending the receipt and examination of the capital claims for the local authority housing construction programme in 1989 it is not possible to indicate what funds will be available to the individual authorities to finance their housing programme in 1989 and, consequently, what schemes may be allowed to commence.
