A joint report was prepared by An Foras Forbartha and the Department of Oceanography, UCG which examined the effects of a proposed sewage discharge to be located south of Mutton Island in Galway Bay. This report was approved by the city council in July 1988 and is being examined in my Department at present. Because of the importance and size of this project, it will be necessary for an environmental impact study to be carried out by Galway Corporation before a final decision can be given on the proposal. Galway Corporation are being advised to make the necessary arrangements for this study and to have it submitted to my Department at the earliest possible date.
I understand that additional technical detail in relation to the arrangement of the works on Mutton Island and the causeway is being prepared and is to be submitted to my Department.
