Vol. 385 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School.

4.

asked the Minister for Education in relation to Scoil Mhuire national school, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9, if she will (a) confirm that she is reviewing the staffing needs of the school and in particular their claim to retain their existing allocation of teachers (b) confirm that while the review is in progress no teacher from the school will be placed on the panel or obliged to accept any offers of posts that may be put before them and (c) sanction the retention by the school of its existing quota of teachers.

The staffing of this school was determined in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. In view of the unexpected increase in enrolment, I had the case reviewed within my Department. However, as the precise required information has still not been furnished by the school authorities to my Department to enable me make a decision on the matter I am arranging for in inspector to visit the school shortly.

Can we take it that in the course of this review the teacher who may be involved would not be put on the panel or would not be obliged to accept offers should offers be made in the meantime?

The Deputy will be aware that the panel system has been in operation for a great number of years and it has worked very satisfactorily with all of the interested parties. I would be reluctant, therefore, to intervene in that aspect. I take it that the Deputy's wish would be that the needs of the schools would be attended to as quickly as possible and that whatever the review findings would be that they would be implemented. The Deputy can take it that the needs of the pupils will be thoroughly scrutinised within the next few days by an inspector from my Department.
