Vol. 385 No. 7

Written Answers. - EC Funding for Tourist Development.

112.

asked the Minister for Finance the EC funding which is available for the development of holiday/leisure resort facilities.

Tourism measures which are directly linked to exploiting the tourist potential of the region in which they are located are eligible for assistance from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). However, full particulars would be required in order to accurately assess any particular project's eligibility for ERDF aid.

In addition, loans are available from the European Investment Bank for capital investment projects in the tourism sector. Such loans are made available either directly by the Bank or through global loans with financial intermediaries. Information on the eligibility criteria for such loans and the general terms and conditions which apply is available from my Department.

As part of the revised western package which is funded from FEOGA (Guidance) consideration is being given to a scheme to promote agri-tourism in the less favoured areas. The intention would be to place the main emphasis in the scheme on the provision of collective facilities and local centres for the development, promotion and marketing of agri-tourism. The scheme will have to be agreed in consultation with the EC Commission. The matter is being expedited with a view to having it finalised as quickly as possible.
