A site had been identified, but not acquired for the proposed new regional technical college at Castlebar, County Mayo, when the Government decided to defer a number of major third level projects, including the Castlebar RTC. These projects were deferred pending the submission of a report by an interdepartmental committee which was established to examine the provision of third level places and the rationalisation, including funding, of third level departments and institutions.
