asked the Minister for Education the number of post-primary teachers in full-time employment since January, 1982; the number of reductions in teaching posts in each category each year since January, 1982; the percentage decrease each year; whether 1,400 teaching posts have been lost over the period 1982 to 1989 inclusive; and if she intends to increase or decrease the number of teachers employed over the next year.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teacher Posts.
The information requested by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
The Deputy will note from the information supplied that there was no decrease in the over-all number of teachers in the period in question. In fact the number increased by some 564 teaching posts.
The number of teachers to be employed in the next school year will depend on the application of the pupil-teacher ratio to pupil enrolment figures. The position of full-time permanent teachers is, however, safeguarded under existing arrangements applicable in the case of these teachers.
