Vol. 389 No. 4

Ceisteanna— Questions. Oral Answers. - Customs Post Traffic Hazard.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the serious traffic hazard being caused by the customs post on the Monaghan-Armagh road outside the town of Monaghan; if he will take measures to have the road made safe; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Commissioners of Public Works have agreed to allocate some funds this year to carry out works at Monaghan customs and excise road station. The proposed works will provide some additional parking facilities on the station site. Discussions are currently taking place between the Revenue Commissioners and the Office of Public Works to decide on the extent of the works which can be undertaken, having regard to the overall financial situation. As soon as this is decided, tender documents for the work will be prepared. The commissioners hope to have the work completed before October next at the latest.

I thank the Minister for his reply. I am glad my prompting has resulted in action being taken at this post, which was creating very serious problems and where numerous accidents took place. I am amazed the matter was not brought to the Minister's attention before now. I am glad action is being taken now and I hope it will not be long before the work is actually completed.

I have been fully aware of those problems since last March when a decision was taken to alleviate them.
